How to prepare Botox: a step-by-step guide
Botulinum toxin is initially supplied in the form of a powder, which is almost transparent and located at the bottom of the bottle. To obtain a solution for injection, it is necessary to dilute a certain amount of powder in saline solution.
The preparation process:
Prepare the materials: You will need a bottle of botox powder, saline solution (for example, 0.9% NaCl), a syringe and a sterile needle.
Measure the dose: Usually a standard bottle contains 100 units of botox, but you can also find packages of 50, 200, 300 or even 500 units. Before dilution, specify the required dosage for the procedure.
Dilute the powder: Adding saline solution depends on how much final solution you want to get. Sample grammars are below.
- Gently pump the vial so that the powder completely dissolves without creating air bubbles. This is important to ensure the uniformity of the solution.
Diluent added to 50 units vial | Resulting dose units per 0.1 mL |
0.5 mL | 10.0 Units |
1.0 mL | 5.0 Units |
1.25 mL | 4.0 Units |
2.0 mL | 2.5 Units |
4.0 mL | 1.25 Units |
Diluent added to 100 units vial | Resulting dose units per 0.1 mL |
1.0 mL | 10.0 Units |
2.0 mL | 5.0 Units |
2.5 mL | 4.0 Units |
4.0 mL | 2.5 Units |
8.0 mL | 1.25 Units |
Diluent added to 200 units vial | Resulting dose units per 0.1 mL |
2.0 mL | 10.0 Units |
4.0 mL | 5.0 Units |
5.0 mL | 4.0 Units |
8.0 mL | 2.5 Units |
16.0 mL | 1.25 Units |
Dosages for injection: The dosage of botox depends on the area of injection and the individual characteristics of the patient. For example:
- Forehead: usually 10 to 30 units.
- Between eyebrows: from 20 to 30 units.
- Corners of the eyes (crow's feet): from 5 to 15 units on each side.
- Jaw: from 20 to 50 units, depending on the purpose of correction.
It is important to remember that the exact dosage and administration technique should be determined by a qualified specialist based on the individual characteristics of the patient. Proper dilution and dosage of botox play a key role in achieving a safe and effective result.
When administering botox, it is important not only the accuracy of the dosage, but also the correct injection depth, which varies depending on the zone.
- Forehead: Injections are usually performed in the upper part of the forehead to a depth of 1-2 mm in order to effectively affect the muscles responsible for the appearance of horizontal wrinkles.
- Between the eyebrows: In this area, injections are made to a depth of 1-3 mm, which allows you to relax the muscles that cause vertical lines between the eyebrows.
- Corners of the eyes (crow's feet): Injections are carried out to a depth of 1-2 mm in the area around the eyes to reduce wrinkles without the risk of damage to delicate skin.
- Jaw and cheekbones: To correct the contours of the face and relax the chewing muscles, injections are performed to a depth of 3-5 mm.
- Neck: Injections are also made to a depth of 1-2 mm in this area to smooth out the so-called "rings of Venus" without the risk of complications.
Proper injection technique and injection depth ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of side effects. Therefore, it is extremely important that the procedure is performed by a qualified specialist with experience in botox injections.
Proper storage of botox is a key factor for maintaining its effectiveness and safety. Here are some recommendations:
- Storage temperature: Botox should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. This prevents the destruction of the active components.
- Avoid freezing: Never freeze botox, as this can negatively affect its properties and effectiveness.
- Shelf life: Always check the shelf life indicated on the package. After dilution, botox should be used within 24 hours if stored in the refrigerator.
- Protection from light: Store Botox in its original packaging or in a dark place to avoid exposure to light, which may impair the quality of the drug.
- Inaccessible to children: Make sure that the drug is stored out of the reach of children to prevent accidental use.

Awesome article! Thank you!
But still have a couple of questions… What about the pain level? Super afraid to do something like botox, but really want to. Heard different reviews on that matter
Hello! Thank you for the interest! And great question.
Yes, the pain level of the procedure really depends on the pain level of the person and can be different. However, botox is injected with one of the thinnest needles, the procedure lasts about 10 minutes. If the patient is still afraid of pain, he can ask the doctor to apply anesthesia (this is often done with a special numbing cream).
