Dermal Fillers : What are the types of

Dermal fillers are injections that help add volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve the shape of the face. They are popular because they offer quick results with little recovery time needed. Dermal fillers are classified by the substance they are based on.

1. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that naturally exists in the body and helps keep the skin moist and full.
  • Benefits:

Natural Look: HA fillers blend well with the skin, giving a natural appearance.

Moisture: They attract water molecules which helps keep the skin hydrated.

Adjustable: HA fillers can be removed with hyaluronidase enzyme if the results aren't what was wanted.

Quick Results: Patients usually notice immediate changes after getting the treatment.

The achieved results will last for 6-12 months. Also hyaluronic acid fillers are usually chosen by those who want to use injectable dermal fillers for the first time.

Hyaluronic acid can vary in viscosity. The viscosity is determined by the number of internal bonds between the
hyaluronic acid molecules. The more there are, the more viscous the product will be. The lowest viscosity HA fillers are used for the thinnest skin zones, such as around the eyes.

Here are the different options of the hyaluronic acid fillers from different companies.

2. Poly-L-Lactic Acid Fillers: Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biodegradable synthetic material that gradually stimulates collagen production.
  • Benefits:

Gradual improvement: Results develop over several weeks or months as collagen builds up.

Long-lasting effects: The effects can last up to two years due to ongoing collagen stimulation.

Dermal fillers based on it are most commonly used to smooth deep wrinkles and deep natural folds on the face, as well as for some tightening of sagging tissue. Most commonly used for body volume.
3. Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers: Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a substance similar to minerals found in bones, which helps in giving structure.
  • Benefits:

Extended durability: CaHA fillers can remain effective for 12 to 18 months.

Boosts Collagen: They help increase collagen production, improving skin's elasticity and tightness.

Wide application: They are good for treating deeper wrinkles and adding volume to areas like the cheeks.

Unlike HA fillers, CaHA fillers cannot be easily dissolved if the results are not satisfactory.

When will I see results?

Most injectable dermal fillers work immediately.

Hyaluronic acid fillers, are very popular due to their look and feel being very natural. They last anywhere between 6 and 18 months, depending on the area treated and on the individual metabolism.

Other fillers, like calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, can last sometimes up to two years or longer. Eventually, all fillers break down naturally in the body.
